The mid-17th century, apart from the relatively
bloodless campaign of 1644-1645, is a period
of peace for Transylvania. It brought political
success but exposed all the deficiencies of the
army. Also, it was too short to “educate” new
commanders and allow the old ones to gain
experience. Many higher commanders had no
experience in commanding larger forces, often
they also lacked the necessary talent. Commanders
of seregs and mercenary captains
were good soldiers but never led larger forces
into combat and were unable to coordinate infantry,
artillery and cavalry.
